Route 66 once ran from Chicago to Los Angeles and provided a trail of adventure during the 50's automobile era. By October 1984 Interstate 40 was finished and Route 66 disappeared into history. Williams was home to the last stop light to be removed from Route 66 as I-40 was completed 1. Williams has retained a small stretch of old Route 66, making it a fun, historic town. Its western theme, complete with street "gun fights", and fifties diners draw tourists from world wide. Walking along the street at night, live music featuring favorite cowboy tunes can be heard. Further on, famous fifties tunes greet the ear.
While quiet during daylight hours, the town fully comes to life after dark. Plan to have an excellent meal at any of several restaurants, including steak houses, Mexican food and fifties style diners. Watch for roving "cowboys" itching for a fight.
Williams is known as the "Gateway To The Grand Canyon". Stop through on your way to the canyon, or, better yet, plan a weekend stay at Williams to fully appreciate its historic offerings.
