Wickenburg
"Thanks for the rain"
by Joe Beeler 1988
|
|
|
Wickenburg is located NW of Phoenix. From I-17, go west on 74, then north on 60 into town. Twisting through the saguaro covered hills, 74 is one of the most scenic drives in the greater Phoenix area, providing a bonus to the overall trip.
Wickenburg is rich with old west history. The Desert Caballeros Western Museum is located on the corner of 93 and 60. Famous for its western exhibits, it is a "must see". The sculpture shown above stands outside the entrance to the museum.

Famous Jail Tree
|
|
|
Wickenburg's famous jail tree is a favorite tourist attraction. For lack of a jail, outlaws were tied to the tree.
The jail tree is across the street from the Desert Caballeros Museum (corner of 60 and 93). On the north side of the jail tree you'll find
Chapparel Homemade Ice Cream, where lucky visitors are treated to live music as well as delicious ice cream.

The old school house, another historic site, is located on 93, just north of the ice cream shop, in Bashas' Frontier Center shopping area.
Continue north on 93 over the wash to find Coffinger Field on your right. Tennis courts, skate board area and picnic
tables are located in a grass park under
shade trees behind the ball field.

The chamber of commerce is located in the old train station on Frontier Street (west of 93). Pick up maps and information on sight seeing and activities in the area and admire
the historic train parked on the tracks outside the chamber.

Special Tips
Traveling with children or special needs
Traveling with children
Museums, parks and fun eateries provide lots of activities for children. Public restrooms are located in the chamber of commerce and Coffinger Field (see above).
Coffinger field provides a wonderful place for little ones to burn off energy.
Accessibility
A ramp provides access to the Chamber of Commerce. The restroom in the chamber is accessible, but the stall is not large enough to contain a wheelchair.
A better option would be the public restrooms in the park behind Coffinger Field. Handicap parking is available throughout the town.
Traveling with pets
As in any town, pets are not allowed in restaurants or shops. Leashed pets are allowed in area parks.
Pets can dehydrate quickly; bring plenty of water and a bowl. Allow your pet to rest in shady areas as needed. NEVER leave a pet unattended in a vehicle.
ALWAYS clean up after your pet.
